Christian Heritage Ephesus

Ancient Ephesus located on the west coast of modern Turkey. It used to be called as Asia Minor. The city was in between Europe and Asia, the capital city of Asian province of Roman Empire with about 250.000 cosmopolitan population.

There is remarks of Christianity in Ephesus about first Century A.D. Its because Ephesus has been visited and select as a primary destination by many Christian leaders , St John , Timothy, St Paul and mother Mary. When we pay attention to the details of christian history and the travel of Christian leaders we can easily say that Christianity Spread out to the European countries via Ephesus. Main reason of St Paul , St john , and Timothy to come to Ephesus was ; its because of cosmopolitan population , and dealers traveling in between Europe and Asia, once they hear the words of Jesus Christ they would also influence the people in their home country. It was sucessful strategy. This is the main reason that St john and Mother Mary settled in Ephesus and St Paul visited Ephesus on his missionary journey. The oldest reference for the Christian heritage in Ephesus is St Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. We do definitely know that St Paul visited the Ephesus on His missionary journey. St Paul Writes;

if with merely human hopes I fought with wild animals at Ephesus, what would I have gained by it? (1 Cor 15:32)I do not want to see you now just in passing, for I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries. (1 Cor 16:7-9)

St John the apostle was living in Ephesus , Its because Jesus Christ entrusted his mother to Beloved disciple , Which is St John. After the death of Jesus Christ Jerusalem was not safe therefore St john took Mother Mary to Ephesus together with him.

St John and Mother Mary spend the recent years of their life in Ephesus. Its believed that he buried his body used to lie under the St John Basilica.
